Why do some people think that music was one cause of the columbine shootings?

i just recently watched bowling for columbine (no comments about michael moore please i DONT CARE) and some of the people interviewed were listing marylin manson as a cause of columbine. people also blame other bands like rammstein (just not in that movie). is there some reasoning behind their opinions?

Why do some people think that music was one cause of the columbine shootings?
Because it just so happened that the kids who were involved in the shooting listened to heavy rock, music most society doesnt approve of. They were just looking for someone to blame. Manson and Rammstein are the unfamiliar and seen as so controversy that society was ignorant enough to blame musicans as a cause of the shooting.
Reply:Because people fear what they do not understand. The blame needs to go some where ( or at least that's how most feel). I do not advocate this. And those blaming the music obviously do not understand it and fear it. Does this help?
Reply:Because of the lyrics of the music, it causes people to become depressed etc. Heres an experiment for you to try. For the rest of the day every 15 minutes I want you to tell yourself that you hate everyone and everyone hates you. By the end of the day you will be depressed and feel lonely. Now if you listen to music that sends the same message or a more depressing one such as suicide and murder, imagine the effect that would have. Words are powerful and the mind easily absorbs them.
Reply:Its easier to blame an artist or a type of music than to admit any fault in our society in general.
Reply:That type of music's songs have hidden messages in them (sometimes not so hidden).
Reply:Music affects a person's "mood". Sometimes, a person who is depressed can be pushed over the edge by the right music. Similarly, other music can be uplifting to one's mood and break a depression.

Music may well have played a part in that incident. However, Ritalin was likely a more causative factor. Schools have gotten into the habit of drugging students who show mood 'disorders' rather than address the actual cause, in this case bullying. Ritalin has a known side effect - increased aggression.

If you are getting information from Michael Moore, you are not getting good info. He is notorious for misleading and for Soviet Montage (look it up), standard propaganda techniques developed by Communists to 'agitate' a population. His films are NOT documentaries.
Reply:People have to blame something so they blame video games and violent music and everything else. Even though Duck Hunt was around a generation before us and songs our parents listened to were just as violent as the ones we listen to now.
Reply:Ever since Heavy Metal music became popular, it has been blamed for many things. There were some suicides and murders in the 80s that were blamed on Twisted Sister and Ozzy Ozbourne. People would rather attack and blame something that they don't understand than admit that they are to blame for what happened.

At the same time, when Rock and Roll became popular in the 50s (especially Elvis with his pelvic girations), parents blamed music for making the teenagers sexually active. Nevermind that there was essentially no sex ed or open discussions - it must have been the music.
Reply:Because, unlike you, these kids were a little screwy to say the least and they took those lyrics to heart. Moreover, their parents didn't pay much attention to them to make sure they were OK. Thing is, it's hard to figure out who will listen to Marilyn Manson, who's a little screwy himself, and commit mass murder and who will listen to him merely as music, if you can call it that. Oh.....Michael Moore is a liar so I'd take whatever he said or did with a grain of salt and a wary eye.
