Do schools take bullying/outcasts a lot more seriously since Columbine, Jonesboro, etc?

Before everyone jumps on me, I know the kids who did the shooting were responsible for the choices they made and no one should make excuses for them. But do schools treat bullying and kids made to be outcasts differently these days, knowing that incidents like Columbine could give bullied kids ideas if they're unstable enough?

Do schools take bullying/outcasts a lot more seriously since Columbine, Jonesboro, etc?
Bullied kids don't need ideas from Columbine or any other tragedy that they can relate to... When you are tortured by your peers, the ideas come to you naturally. I was picked on a lot at school, I hated it. I would lock myself in my room so I didn't have to go. My mom had to be at work and she didn't have time to fight with me, so I would end up staying home. I remember in 8th grade I had one pair of jeans and I had to wear them every day because I couldn't afford anything else. I was picked on really bad about that. I had 2 or 3 shirts to last but a kid put gum on my back one day and I had to throw it away. I would get things thrown at me from across the room, pushed into the locker or the wall... and I finally just stood up to myself. It didn't stop anything, they still messed with me but not as much. In highschool I never talked to anyone, I just kept to myself. I didn't hang out with anyone from school and I didn't go to lunch and I didn't go to any events. When I did try to talk to someone they would blow me off or ignore me, so what was the point? There was a boy who would make jokes about me that is considered sexual harrassment and I did turn him in to the principal once. He told me that I had to be making it up and it wasn't the same as the boys story so there wasn't anything he could do about it. I didn't understand that, when someone is sexually harrassing you OF COURSE they are not going to admit to it.

No, schools and principals and guidence counselors don't give a damn about it... and when it is too late they will swear they "didn't read the signs".
Reply:In theory and on paper, not in reality. Many have zero tolerance policies, which means they STILL don't exercise any reasonable judgment, still don't treat kids as individuals. That's not just the administrators and teachers, that means fellow students, too. No one WANTS to be alone, to be an outcast, appearances to the contrary. Talk to them, listen to them. If your being popular is the most important thing to you, then you're not just part of the problem, you ARE the problem.
Reply:No. Actually I was bullied by teachers as well. My RS teacher hit me on the face twice, maths teacher hit me on the hand for forgetting to give her my book. I was bullied for whole 6 years in Poland (kids and teachers), later I moved here and was bullied for 2 years. I told my teachers but they never did anything and eventually I landed in hospital 4 times with trial of suicide. Now everything is fine, but some schools should be ashamed of the way they are watching over their students...
Reply:No, they don't. Because if the schools really got involved there would be NO bullying ANYWHERE.

School Administrators like to push everything "under the rug." They tell you what you want to hear and once the schoolday is over, it's no longer a concern to them. They figure they've done what they're supposed to. They don't follow up on anything.

I'd like to have their paychecks to sit behind a desk and pretend I did something important.
Reply:At my school, we take it really seriously. Even if we say a person is stupid, we get sent to the principal. Every advisory day, we have to do a worksheet on Rachel Joy Scott. It's mostly about ethics and integrity. Yes, I do get aggravated at the fact that we have been working on it since September. But when you think about it, everything is worth it. At least I don't have a black eye.
Reply:Not really.

My son was getting harassed via email, phone calls, etc. He was even punched (not by the same person)! We went to the principal and we showed him printouts of the emails, voicemails, etc. The principal claimed all he could do was send the harasser to one detention!

Really, it did nothing.
Reply:nope. principal in my school don't know wtf is going on. it's not serious bullying but this girl is trying to be queen b. my school is stupid, they think that everyone is full of sunshine.
Reply:no. my brother commit suicide becasue he was bullied so badly at school and it happened after those events. i even see it going on at my school today. its sad
Reply:Nope not at all. Do you think principals honestly think of Columbine when making a decision on what to do with a bully? They don't.
Reply:Not in my area
